This site is wonderful- I only wish my grandfather, Stanley Gruber (U.S. Navy, Seaman 1st Class) had web access to see it himself. He, like so many others, was on the Maryland on that fateful Sunday. I have been lucky to have the opportunity to hear his stories of time on the ship, he is still alive and kicking! He has been active with the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association in Wisconsin. Thanks again for the great site!

This is small sliced of one of several articles posted in the Lafayette Journal Courier, Friday, March 23, 2003.
Lafayette Indiana's Vince Amato will always remember Pearl Harbor ... and he will never forget the kids in Mark Preston's history class at Jefferson High School.
"I love all of you," Amato, a 79-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor, told the teenagers Friday. "Whenever you see me on the street, don't say 'Mister,' say 'Vince.' I'll feel good."
Four weeks ago, Preston invited Amato to speak to the students about his experiences as a young sailor on
Dec. 7, 1941, when the U.S. Pacific Fleet was attacked by the Japanese. Amato's battleship, the USS Maryland, was bombed. Some 2,340 military personnel died that day, throwing the United States into World War II.
Responding to a question, Amato said he had never returned to Pearl Harbor. A student in the class, Ashley Gillam, 17, then launched a fund-raiser that will pay for Amato and his daughter to fly to Hawaii on March 23 and spend a week there, all expenses paid.
Amato said, "When I read in the paper and see on TV what young people do, it's not good. Then,
when I see this, I can't help but cry about it.
"How do I say thanks?" he asked the class. "I know the word, and I know how to spell it.
"If we ever have to go back to war, I'll go back for all of you."
This article is among can be read in it's entirety at www.jconline.com and Search "Amato"

Today, March 6, 2003 finishing touches will be added to an exhibit at The Dundalk/ Patapsco Neck Historical Society in Dundalk Maryland, Featuring the Battleship USS Maryland BB-46.
Included in the display will be photos of the ship, Blue prints, maps, books, photos of sailors, copies of deck logs, a tape of a Baltimore radio station broadcast of the WW II saga of the Maryland and even copies of " The Catapult", the Fighting Marys shipboard newletter.
The USS Maryland was commissioned on July 21, 1921. She was 624 feet long, displaced over 32,000 tons and was the first US Navy ship to mount 16" guns and first battleship to carry a plane catapult.
In 1929 the Maryland while serving in the Pacific Fleet, was given the honor on carrying President-elect Herbert Hoover and his cabinet on a trip to visit central and South America.
The Maryland was present at Pearl Harbor that tragic morning of December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked. Though reported sunk by Japanese newscasts, the Maryland recieved only light damage and after a trip to Bremerton, Washington, she was ready to fight again in February, 1942.
By the conclusion of the war, the Maryland had been bloodied 3 times by the Japanese, lost many brave men, and earned 7 battlestars.
She was decommissioned in 1946, placed in resevered and scrapped in 1959.
For more information on the exhibit contact Steve Pavlosky @

I am honored to be able to say thank you to the men that were the heart of such a vessel. In the Officer study of the current Maryland is a lithograph of all the US ships that have carried her name. It is on a nautical chart for the Kings Bay, GA waters that she now calls home. Thank you all once again.

Greetings to the Maryland veterans! I am in the process of assembling a historical collection of US battleship newspapers. To date, I have assembled papers from 6 of the battleships that were at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41. I currently have a 1928 copy of "The Morning Hurricane" from the Maryland. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who had an actual copy of "The Catapult" that they would be interesting in selling.
Rest assured, this is a legitimate historical collection that is on display in my home--many navy veterans have come to see it.

I served in the Maryland from September 1943 to October 1944 -- first as an Ensign in the main battery plotting room, F Division, (where I lost many pinochle games during inactive general quarters) under Lt. Warren Lowery, and then as a Lt. jg, First Division Officer. I left the ship at Manus Island to return to the States for flight training. Some weeks later, I learned, the ship was hit by a kamikaze off Leyte: Assuming the accuracy of the report, the plane struck turret two and slid under the overhang of turret one; tragically, the man who had taken my place was killed doing what I would have been doing -- sitting in the open hatch up into the overhang. Can anyone verify this account? Does anyone happen to remember me? -- Jonathan Leff

My dad, Mark DeLong (CWO) served on the Maryland throughout WW II and was at Pearl Harbor. I was wondering if anyone remembers him? His nickname was "Chips" and from stories he told he was friends with "Stinky Davis", and Johnny Johnson. I'm trying to find out more about his Navy years. He passed away in May 1996. Also, thank you to all the kind men who let my son Alex interview them at the 60th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Maryland Luncheon - the video he made is really touching and was shown at his school - the intrviews really brought home Pearl Harbor to the kids!

A Great use of the internet! This is a wonderful site and we thank the originators. I would also like to thank all those men and women who served this country in all of its conflicts to save freedom! My father served on the proud "Mary" from 42 thru 45 I believe. His name is Joesph E. Dorsey or "Jack Dorsey" from Houston Texas. He joined at the age of 17 and spent time as a cook but was later a second class fire-controll man for the 16". He has told me storys about the war and the great ship all my life and I have come to love her(Maryland)as if it was me that was aboard her. I am very proud of my modest, quite spoken father who did his part to stop the oppression of evil against our great country! His love for the great ship is evident anytime we speak of her. There are shipmates he would like to see and hear from, wait until I give him this site, he will be excited! If you would like to say hello to him or me for that matter please contact me at dorseyclan@pdq.net or phone me at (281)565-0210 ask for Mike! Thanks again for a great site we can all enjoy!

My Dad, Howard Wheatcroft and my uncle, Odell Williams were stationed on board the Maryland. My uncle was on board at Pearl Harbor, my Dad came aboard after the refitting in Bremerton after Pearl Harbor. They became good buddies and that is how my Dad met my Mom, Odell was her brother and Odell talked Dad into writing to her and the rest is history. My uncle passed away in 1992 but my Dad is still
alive and living in Decatur, AL. Many times I've listened to Dad's war stories with great interest. I just finished watching "Hell in the Pacific" on TLC and decided to look on the web and found this site. I emailed my Dad to let him know about it. Great site. Also, to all the men who served this great country of ours, my heart felt gratitude goes to all of you, THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU

My wife's grandfather was on the mighty Mary in the late years of the war. His name was Clarence Hillsman. I do not know any details about him, i.e. rank, years of service, etc. If anyone can fill in the missing blanks of this great man, feel free to contact me. He passed away with a heart attack in June, 1980 and I never got to know him. My father-in-law said that he never talked about the war or his time on the ship. Clarence and his wife later divorced and my father-in-law was without a father the rest of his adolescent life. So any information about Clarence will be very appreciated. I am assembling a historical collection of US battleship newspapers--particularly from those battleships that were at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41. To date, I have gathered papers from four ships (Arizona, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and the Pennsylvania). These have all been preerved and framed and are all on display in my home. Many naval veternas have visited and enjoyed this collection.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have a copy of the Maryland's newspaper (called The Catapult I think) that they would be interested in selling. Thank you very much!

MY FATHER, HARLEY HUGH KIDD,S2c SERVED IN 1944 UNTIL THE WAR ENDED ON THE MARYLAND.AT WARS END HE DID 6 MONTHS OCCUPATION ON OKINAWA BEFORE COMING HOME. HE WAS ON BOARD WITH SOME OTHER BUDDIES FROM LAWRENCE CO. TENNESSEE, ONE OF WHOM WAS ARNOLD LEON LAND WHO DIED IN ONE OF THE 2 HITS BY KAMIKAZE PLANES. MY DAD WAS RIGHT BELOW THE TURRENT OR THE DECK BELOW HIM WHEN IT HAPPENED. HE NEVER TALKED MUCH ABOUT THE WAR EXCEPT A COUPLE STORIES, MAINLY ABOUT THE FOOD. SAID NEVER LIKED SPAGETTI AFTER THEN. WE AT ONE TIME HAD THE OFFICIAL BOOK ON THE MARYLAND THAT CAME OUT AFTER THE WAR. MOM SAW AN ADVERTIZMENT IN THE PAPER ABOUT IT AND ORDERED IT. SOME ONE BORROWED IT WHEN I WAS SMALL AND DON'T REMEMBER IT. A FEW YEARS BEFORE HE DIED FROM A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK IN 1991, HE GAVE ME THE ASSIGNMENT OF GETTING ANOTHER COPY OF IT. I WENT THRU MANY PHONE CALLS, AND FINALLY TALKED TO SOMEONE AT THE NAVAL LIBRARY IN D.C. THE BOOKS WERE ONLY PRINTED AS THE DEMAND AT THAT TIME. THE MAN I TALKED TO WAS KIND ENOUGHT TO SEND ME A COPIER COPY OF MOST OF THE BOOK. HE SAID THERE A COUPLE COPIES IN THE LIBRARY BUT WERE NOT LOANED OUT ANY LONGER. DADDY SURE ENJOYED LOOKING THRU IT. I'VE ALWAYS APPRECIATED THE HELP THAT PERSON AT THE NAVAL LIBRARY GAVE ME.

My cousin, Lloyd T. Milligan was only 21 yrs old when he was killed during a kamikase attack on the USS Maryland Nov. 29, 1949. There are just three family members left who remember him and I want to pass on to my son everything I can about Lloyd so he won't be forgotten. I was just a little girl when he was killed but I do remember him as a tall, nice kid who took me to the store to get an ice cream. The family thought he was the cream of the crop and talked about him often. Now so many of them are gone but most of them have children and grandchildren to remember them. If there is anyone out there who knew him I'd love to hear from you. I found this wonderful site from one on the M.D.s I work with and he and I know you men and women who fought WWII are true heroes. I must say this is an excellent website, and hats off to whoever is responsible for it. Great work. I am very interested in the history of the USS Maryland since my grandfather served from, I believe, 1943 to '45. His name was Clifford Venable from Oklahoma but he unfortunately passed away in 1971. I was never able to discuss with him his days during the war. I do have some a nice collection of photos from his Maryland days which includes pictures of I assume his closer friends. A few of the pictures have "Killed in Kamekaze attack, Philippines" written on the back. I'm not sure who the men are. If anyone knew my grandfather, please contact me. I'd love to hear any stories you might have. Thanks.

My daughters Tiffany and Tricia recently found this website, and I am thrilled. My father, Robert "Robbie" Robinson, served as a cook on the Maryland and was below deck at his battlestation loading shells. Dad married Wilma Housel in Bremerton WA after being introduced just 13 days before! Mom's dad Oliver Housel worked in the shipyard there and was not happy with her choice of a sailor, but he came to love Dad also.Every Christmas we get out the pictures and talk about his days as a sailor. He is the only surviving Pearl Harbor veteran in Marquette County, WI and was honored this Memorial Day.Dad has five brothers, he is the oldest, who also have served in the Navy. I am told his mother suffered a miscarriage when she leared of the attack. Visiting the memorial is now on my list of things to do since seeing the new movie. Thank you to all those who served.

My Cousin, Robert F. Painter, known as Bob, served on the Maryland during the attack on Pearl Harbor and in later battles. He was a refrigeration expert, so most likely worked in an engineering department of some sort. He would never discuss his experiences from the War, so the family always assumed that he saw many horrific sights that he preferred to wipe away from his memory. He died in December 1998. I would be most interested to hear from anyone who knew him on board. Obviously, the whole experience of the War and specifically Pearl Harbor must have been terrifying, but family members such as myself are very curious as to what specifically might have made Bob so adamant in his refusal to even discuss his experiences. Many thanks!

My dad, Warren Pelham Lowerre (a/k/a/ "Sunshine")graduated from Annapolis in 1940 and had the Maryland as his first tour of duty. He served on her from the summer of 1940 through Pearl Harbor and was part of the crew who mothballed her after the war. Dad is a spry 83 and still married to Yvonne. When they married in 1942 in San Francisco, Dad (an Ensign) was given a "ship wheel clock" by some of the enlisted men, which Mom and Dad still have in their family room. Warren and Yvonne have lived in Dallas since the very late '40's. He refuses to acquire a computer--says that there is no time. It would interfere with golf (2 times per week) and the 2 or 3 square dance groups to which they belong. If anyone is interested, you may reach Dad in Dallas at 214-352-2493.

My Dad was Roy E. Turner--probably known as "Butch". He served on the Maryland from about 1930 to 1936. (Dates not exact.) He talked often about the ship, the way the battleship fleet would fill the horizon, about stopping at the equator. He played football--probably would be called a wide receiver today, something else then, don't know what. He had, at one time, 6 little gold colored footbals that said "Battleforce Champions" That would be the Maryland. He talked about Tom Hamilton, an officer, who was the coach and went on to be athletic director at, I think, Penn State, after his Naval career. No question those were the best days of his life. When the War started, he tried to enlist, but the Navy said he was too old, and he spent the War making bomber parts. He regretted that until he died. He wanted to be with Maryland and her crew. He died in 1976 not knowing anything about her except that she was hit, but not seriously damaged in the Pearl Harbor attack. I wish he could have seen this site. But I am grateful to finally know what she did and what happened to her.
I salute all the men who served on the Maryland, from her first voyage to the last. And a special Thanks to the men who served aboad her during that dreadful war--one war that clearly needed to be fought (and won). You guys did good. I know Da is proud to have been one of you. Thank you all.

My uncle, Lawrence Robert "Bob" McClaren, was on the USS Maryland during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was from Burlington, Iowa, and at the time would have been a tall, handsome 19-year-old with black hair, blue eyes, and a square jaw. Later in the 1940s, he was subjected to neurosurgery that (doctors said) would alleviate symptoms that may have been caused by war injuries. He spent many years in an Iowa VA hospital and died of a heart attack in the late 1980s. If anyone remembers Bob McClaren, please contact me. Thank you.

I would like to say I have enjoyed your site about the USS Maryland. I have been interested in the history of the WWII
and have read about all the great Naval leaders of that time.
I wanted to let you know that the Maryland has a special signifince to me as I had two uncles aboard at the attack on Pearl. Patrick Higgins was a signalman, and Carl Higgins was a quarter master. They both survived the war and retired for the Nayy, however they have since passed away.
My uncle Patrick was a naval recruiter in Lincoln Nebraska and enlisted myself and a friend. I have since retired from the Navy and have to say I sincerely miss it.

Thank You for a Wonderful Tribute to The" Mary Maru " My father H.ROYCE RICHTER AND My uncle WILMER RICHTER were aboard during the attack on Pearl Harbor. My Dad passed away on August 31, 1994 and he was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He pushed the state of Wisconsin to issue the first Pearl Harbor Surviors Plates and was granted the 1st plate issued and it reads BB 46 . He told me so much about the Mary and I listened intently. On Dec 7th , 1942 (Sunday) he told me that "If you went to Chapel you got a pass off the ship for the day". He was in the "Head" and the "Japs caught him with his Pants Down". The alarm sounded and at first he thought it a Drill. Then in a moment he felt the ship List and it almost knocked him to the floor. My father wrote in his published account on the 50th Anniversary of the Attack that during one of many battles " You could have walked to the islands shore on the bodies that were floating on the water, Except they were on Fire because of all the oil in the water". He even had a part from a Kazakmi plane which to this day my uncle Bill (Wilmer) takes around the country with him to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Associations Annual Meetings for people to view. My uncle is very active in the PHSA to this day and lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota They called my Dad "BUZZ" because he Snored so loud. He was only 18 when Pearl was Bombed. He brought back Braclets made of tutle shell and silver from FIJI and "Tiger's Eye" Sea Shells from other islands ,he spoke of Midway, The Pacific Theater, Guadacanal, and Palau, ( another spelling error I'm sure). I used to watch "World at War" with him and He would always point out the "Mary" when he say her in the film footage. My Dad was VFW Post Commander for 2 terms at the Hayward, Wisc Post. He received a PURPLE HEART and was discharged to a Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. He Married My Mother Blanche (she will be 80 in May of 2001) in San Fransico in 1942 while on a quick leave and they were Married 52 years at the time of his passing. He loved the Navy , His Country and I am quite sure would have been a "Lifer" if not for the medical discharge. He left a rich and wonderful legacy in his loving family of his wife, 3 children, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. You know, I have been racking my brain about what to name Our Really Big Pontoon Boat and I think The "Mary Maru" would be nice, don't you ? My father is listed in the Book PEARL HARBOR with a picture and accounts of the war. He had a beautiful leather photo album with a redition of the U.S.S. Maryland on the cover and it was loaded with photos memories of the men he served with and the places he had been. He was Proud to Serve and I am Proud to be his daughter. Thank You once again for this excellent site . Please feel free to contact me if you like.

I've been following this site for some time reading the accounts of many who have added comments, experiences or stories of loved one's who served aboard the 'Mary' on December 7, 1941. I notice one account of a 'Gunner's Mate striker who was writing a letter in a gun tub at the time of the attack, subsequently, being able to fire machine gun striking a blow for both the Maryland and the United States by hitting one of the attacking Japanese aircraft. I've read other similar accounts of this individual action, other places, but have NEVER seen his name mentioned. Without taking the time to explain my affiliation with the PHSA, I can tell you his name was Lester V. Short writing a letter to a fellow shipmate, on leave back on the mainland, at the time of the attack. I also have in my possession varies documents presented to Les subsequent to his action. Anyone further interested in my sharing additional information or verification of this claim, please don't hesitate to E-mail me.

My grandfather, Armand Perez, served on the USS Maryland during WWII. I have listened with great interest over the years as he told his stories of his time on this battleship, once as a wide eyed little boy and now as an adult who can appreciate his efforts during the war. 12/6/00 "Remembering Pearl Harbor" Part 3 True story of Homer Williams. When Dad made it to his AA gun, he got a shell from the ready racks a loaded it in the 5" gun. He began to train the gun when one of his gun crew arrived to help elevate. As Dad related to me 35 or so years later he just went on automatic, they fired there all there ready shells and had to break open the ammo lockers to keep fighting. He said during that things were happening so fast it was hard to remember details now. At one point they were sure they hit one Jap plane but he believed they had to share credit for the kill. He remembered when the Arizona exploded the whole gun crew was thrown to the deck from the concussion. It ruptured Dad's eardrums and they bled. But on they fought. More to follow. Aloe Ha! Brad

12/2/00 GM3c Homer Williams at Pearl Harbor, Part II. When the PBY hanger exploded, all Dad's training kicked in and he ran for his battlestation. This was the #1 5"51 DP antiaircraft gun on the Port side of the ship. As he ran down the deck he noticed a motorboat launch moving towards the ship. The sailor's aboard hailed him to get a rope ladder so the officer could come aboard. So off Dad went to find one. Soon he came back and prepared to anchor it down so he could lower it to the waiting officer. Just then he heard the ominus sound of a diving plane with the chatter of machine guns! He looked left towards the stern, there he saw a Jap fighter flying down battleship row straffing the decks. With only seconds to act he quickly threw the rope ladder over the side before he had the chance to attach it. So the officer below quickly dodges the falling mass cussing loudly. Dad runs toward the #2 Main Gun Turret and rolls under it's overhang for protection. For years afterward Dad remembered the feeling of real fear that he could die today as he saw the teakwood deck where he had been standing get riddled with bullets! Over coming his fear he got up and ran again towards his battlestation. Until next time, Aloe Ha. Brad

11/21/00 Hello BB-46 Vets! With the approach of Pearl Harbor Day next month I thought It would be a good time to swap "I was there" stories. My father Dixie Homer Williams was a gunners mate at that time and had just come up on the main deck starboard side to look across Ford Island as he drank a cup of joe. The time was 0740. In just a few minutes he noticed planes flying around and assumed that the Army was having another mock air attack session. Just then he noticed a plane diving down over a PBY float plane hanger. As it pulled up he could see the underside of its wings. "Those are meatballs! Japs!!!" he said out loud as a great explosion lifted the roof off of the PBY hanger. More to follow. Aloe Ha

Hello. My uncle, Harold Alcock, was killed during a kamakaze attack (I believe it was the November attack) on the USS Maryland. I would like to hear from anyone who knew him so that I can put your memories in a little book I am starting, to give to my father (Harold's brother) for Christmas.
When my uncle died, several of you wrote letters to my Dad's family for years, tho you didn't even know them personally, and even sent holiday cards years after Uncle Harold died. I want to thank you for doing that. You cannot imagine how much it was appreciated--we still have those cards and letters--and they are a family treasure. I would like to add to them, so please, if you would take a moment and send me any mememories you have about Harold Alcock would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much! Lynne Burke

My uncle, Wayne D. Ring, was on the Maryland during the attack
on Pearl. He died Oct. 4, 2000. The following is an excerpt
from his obit: He volunteered for active duty in the US Navy
in September, 1940. He survived the attack on Pearl Harbor
aboard the USS Maryland and quickly achieved the rank of.
Chief Fire Control Technician while participating in some
of the fiercest naval battles in the South Pacific. After
VJ day he was an instructor in the US Navy fire control
schools until his retirement from active duty in 1960.
He had countless friends from those experiences and was
recognized for outstanding duty as Secretary of the Pearl
Harbor Survivors Association and the USS Maryland Veterans
Association.

My father, Allan Raymond Bannister (DOB 9/27/19)served aboard the Battleship Maryland during WWII and was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, when it was bombed by the Japanese.
If anyone remembers him, I would love to hear from you and I know he would too. He is alive and reasonably well at 81 years of age. He lives in Fontana, California, with his wife Anna Mae. They have been married 56 years. Dad has not embraced the computer world as yet, but I have and will be glad to respond to anyone who sends me a message.
Also, if anyone has any pictures of him from the war years or their time on the Maryland, I would like to have a copy of those as well. I'm certainly willing to pay for reprints. Stories about your experiences with my dad and the Maryland and WWII would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My dad (James Woodrow "WOODY" Herrell) served on the
Maryland from about mid 1941 till around the end of the war. I
I couldn't get him to talk about it very much so I
know very little. Anyone who knew him I would really like
to hear from you. I believe he was in the Engine and/or
the Boiler Room. I never saw the Maryland but I did see
the Jersey in action in Viet Nam, so I have some an idea of
what these great ships are capable of. God Bless BB-46 and
her vets, without their sacrifice I wonder where we would
e today.

My father, CHARLES M. SLATON aka "Slugger" served aboard the Maryland as a Machinist. After the war began, he went on to Navy Diving School. After graduation he went to the Mediterranean as a hard hat diver. He cleared harbors in North Africa, Italy and France. He caught a Bronze Star and lived. He retired as a Chief and completed a second career in civil service for the Navy. He and my Mother are in their 80s and live in California. They both enjoy their grand kids, RVing in theirHoliday Rambler and their gardens. Like him, I too joined the Navy. But I went through flight training, was commissioned, and then did Vietnam as a fighter pilot. But that is another story. He speaks very well of the training he received on the "Mary." To all of you old hands, my gratitude for a job well done! Sincerely, Phil Slaton, Silverdale, WA.

I think that what you've done is truly great. Only wish my Dad were alive to see it. He served on the BB46 long before the war. As I recall, he thought they were amoung the best years of his life. Have many old crew pictures of the 46 from long before the war. She was obviously a great ship with a proud heritage. Sadly, she & her sisters were so quickly forgotten. She'd sure would look great in Baltimore's Inner Harbor today.

I really enjoyed this site. My boyfriend's greandfather was on the Maryland and we are trying to find a model to build but I am having no luck with it. If any one knows, I would appreciate the information.
On another note. 4th of July w-end my boyfriend, Sean, and I visited with his greadfather and told him about this site and wanted to know if he was interested in viewing it or trying to get in touch with anyone. All he said is that he was no one special for what he had done and that when he was on the ship at Pearl Harbor, it was a long time ago. We both assumed that he didn't want to talk about it. We are lucky to know the stories that we do know, but I think that will be all. His name is Jack Moore and he is about the sweetest guy you could ever meet. He has had a wonderful life and I am pround of what he has done for us and pround to know him.

To Fallen Heros,
I would like to acknowledge this website on behalf of my father who served aboard Maryland from Nov, 1941 thru late 1945. My father was Motor Machinist Mate 1st Class Philip H. Martin. My dad loved that ship and spoke with tears when he recalled shipmates. He also would become very upset when he saw Maryland for the last time because she was awaiting the cutting torch. He tried to go aboard but wasn't allowed because the ship was private property at the time.
He felt to be scrapped was a poor ending for this proud warrior. That ship and my father inspired me to serve in the Navy for eleven years. I lost my dad in March, 1999.He was buried with a white hat and a set of dress blues, as well as full military honors. I popped tall and saluted that day as taps was for him. He, like many others are the heart and soul of what keeps the Maryland alive today.

My dad served on the Maryland from late 1941--soon after Pearl Harbor through most of the war. He was Pharmacists Mate 2d Class, Herman Bauer. He detached from the ship's company shortly before Okinawa, which was fortunate for him(and me), because a Kamikaze crashed on the MARYLAND, striking what had been my dad's battlestation, killing all the ship's company in that section of the ship. He was at Tarawa, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Peliliu, and Leyte Gulf, and forgive me if I forgot one. He is alive, well, and I urge him to stay in touch with his shipmates. I will inform him of this website, but I am proud that I am the son of a WWII veteran and one who served on this magnificent battlewagon. Thank you for having this great website. Tim Bauer

In memory of my father, Robert E. O'Hara, Jr., who passed away on January 26, 2000. Our family is very proud of my father's and the others service to our country. My father kept a diary (written as it was happening) of the events surrounding 7 Dec 41. Very interesting read. I remember him telling us that the ammunition was locked up as it was Sunday morning and all the superior officers were off the ship. He told us the planes were coming in so close overhead that they were picking up anything they could find on the decks to throw back at th
