I am wondering about the USS Marylands history. I have a Christmas Menu from the USS Maryland dated 1912.
U.S.S. Maryland
Navy Yard
Mare Island, Cal
Christmas, 1912
I have read here that the ship was comissioned in 1920. If anyone has any information, please e-mail me at:

Thank-You

And what were the specific duties? This information has been difficult to find. Being in the medical field myself I am always interested in military medicine. Any assistance is appreciated. My father was a PHS and I would like to find a model or photo of the ship USS Maryland. I have heard many stories and have visited Battleship Row and was very moved by the experience. One of the proudest moments in my dads life was serving his country, and he shared so much of it with us growing up. Is there anyone out there who could tell me more about his life back then? His name was Carl Miller, I am sorry I don't know what his job was or his rank at the time. Thank you...Marianne(Miller) Bamm

My Dad was a hero in everything he did in life. One of his proudest achievement's was serving on the USS Maryland. Although he passed away this last August, his many stories of his time spent on the Maryland, will live with me forever. I never got tired of hearing them.

Having been born and raised in Maryland, and having a father who was retired Navy I have always been fond of the USS Maryland. I have a picture of her that I got from the Naval Institute.
My father, a retired RMC (now deceased), bought me a letter opener and a keychain sometime in the late '60's both of which had teak in them that was purported to be from the deck of the Maryland. I know that these items were advertised in the Fleet Reserve Association's magazine, Naval Affairs for quite awhile around that time. I still have the letter opener, although I have lost the keychain.
My only comment on the website, which is generally excellent, is that all the pictures depicting the main battery refer to 16" guns, and I believe the Maryland's main battery was composed of 14" guns. Am I correct, or did I simply misremember my facts?
Thanks for preserving a bit of history. Jim Arnold, Major, USAF(Ret).

New Book out about BB-46!!!"THE LAST BIG-GUN NAVAL BATTLE"...The Battle of Surigao Strait by Howard Sauer assigned to Maryland as a gunnery officer in 42'. As of early Dec. this book was unavailiable at any of the book stores, small or large chain store. I ordered mine from amazon.com books via the internet and I got it just 3 days later! So far it has been great! It is really neat to be reading this book to your Father and he tells you what damage etc. took place, only to read it in the next paragraph! Yes; he was part of the crew at the time. So gentlemen, when you have finished reading your copy I'd like to read here what you think. Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Hey Vets
I'm building a model of the Maryland as she appeared at Pearl on Dec 7 1941. I have a question for those who may have served at or before this date. What happened to the bow bullnose anchor???? Mary is only carrying 2 anchors, not three in all photos just before and after Pearl. Any body like to share stories, please email me at . Thanks

Steve Pavlosky
