Hey Mike,
No No No I mean sorry barrel length( its 6 am)
On a 16 inch , 45cal cannon, the barrel was 45 times longer than the shell width. Same with
5" 25, 5"38, and 5" 50 Sorry about the mistake on the last post.

Mike ,
I know this. The 16 inch deterimined the shell width. The 45 cal tells the shell length.

My wife's Grandfather was a cook on the USS Maryland. I have become quite interested in the history of this ship. This may seem like a simple question to some, but the main armament was 16" & 5" guns. My question, what is meant by the 45 caliber and 38 caliber. Knowing the caliber of handguns and such, this caliber is a much different scale. How do you figure it out?
Thanks,
Mike Klinkowski

Okay, so I read your link to Ship's statistics and it says the main armament was 16" guns! I'll believe you until I unpack my copy of American Naval Fighting Ships and check it out - my memory must be a lot worse than I thought! Jim Arnold
