Originally from Colorado, my grandfather, Norman E. Johnson, was serving on the Maryland during Pearl Harbor. Now residing in Pacifica, California with his wife Irma, he is, and has been, an incredible role model for myself and brother. If anyone has any stories or moments to share about my grandfather, I would appreciate an email as I would like to know him through your eyes. Thank you to all of the veterans. I love you Poppa!
Best, Marlene Kuhn

My uncle, Ernie Esposito is looking for a few of his shipmates. He was aboard the Maryland 12/7/41. If anyone knows Jerry Robertson, John Radick or George Silbernagle please contact me. He would love to hear from them or any of his old shipmates. This has been a great site. I will read some of the postings and ask him if he rembers any names. Some he knows and some sound familiar to him, but there were a lot of men on the ship and it was a very long time ago

My grandfather, Charles Pinnell was aboard ship on Pearl Harbor Day and is surviving well with his wonderful wife, my grandmother Mary, on Walnut Street in Kincaid, Illinois, 62540. Grandpa's one heck of a pool player still, always keeps us in veggies from his garden, makes his rounds every Friday for groceries (not missing one store in town!), strong in his faith, and a smile that'll warm anyone's heart. Obviously, he is well-loved. What Grandpa isn't is a computer guru, so I'm writing this for him and asking that anyone who remembers him, drop him a line (he just had a birthday in July) Grandpa is a great story-teller and has fond memories of his days with his shipmates, so please write! Thank you! ---Trene Pinnell Anderson,

My Father, John David Praeger, USMC (known as "Dave") was
stationed on the USS Maryland from 1936-1937. During
that time they performed maintenance ops between San
Pedro, San Francisco, went to the Midway isls and Honolulu
on a training mission, and finally to Bremerton for dry
dock. I am very interested in anyone who might have
known him.
He was about 23-24 at that time. Unfortunately he died in
1961 when I was only 10 and I am eager to know more
about him. Feel free to email me with any information. In
his log/journal he says the ship was there when they
opened the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge.

I'm trying to get some information on a cousin who was a veteran of Pearl Harbor. His name was Bill Meldrum and he was from Texas. I believe that he served on the U.S.S. Maryland but I'm not sure. Unfortunately, he passed away several years ago and we failed to record information about his service during the war. Any information on Bill would be appreciated by his family.

This is my second post. My Grandfather is Giles Evans, he served aboard the Maryland from 1940-1943. On my first post, I did not know his division or duty, but after talking to him, I am pleased to say he was in 2nd Division and his duties were Upper Powder( in the big 16's) If anyone out there knows him, I would love to print up something from his shipmates that he might remember. I have mentioned to him about the reunion in Seattle, but I don't know if he wants to make the trip or not. I think he would love to hear from someone who he remembers. Thanks again to all the vets. You may think that you were ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances, but you ARE HEROES!!:) Thanks again, Travis

My grandmother (his Mom) died a few years ago, we had lost touch, and I am just curious to know more about his life then.

I am doing a biography on my father, Myles Bernard Timmins, aka Tim or Red Timmins. He was the ship's engineer on the Maryland during the 20's and 30's. He retired as a lieutenant commander in the mid-40's. He was a Navy football quarterback and won medals for boxing and crew. He passed away in 1958 and is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Pt. Loma. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren know little about him, so if anyone can help with information, it would be most appreciated.

There is a saying to those that have gone through something like war and it goes like this. "FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR LIFE, LIFE HAS A FLAVOR THE PROTECTED WILL NEVER KNOW". Hi Bill,
My name is Steve Pavlosky and I am doing research on the Maryland. I have fornd some great sites with USN public domain photos that you can download and print, but the only 1941 pics I have so far found are all from Pearl, Dec 7 and soon after.
Here are the sites

http://www.history.navy.mil/index.html

http://www.greatwhitefleet.org/maryland/03/index.html

http://www.usni.org/hrp/hrp.html

http://www.warships1.com/

Where was Marys Ms 21 paint applied??? (the dark gray and light grat above the stacks) If it was bremmerton we may be able to find something through the Bremmerton shipyard.
I have researched her pretty well and noted and followed her modernizations for 1921 thru 1945. 1939 was the last time I think she was overhauled on the west coast and I believe she had her new torpedo bulge added and I believe the center bow anchor was landed then. The 1.1 machine guns I believe were added in August of 1941. Any help or storys you like to share I'd be greatful for. I am creating an exhibit for the Dundalk Historical society on the east side of Baltimore and am looking for vets stories and recollections.
Steve Pavlosky
PS Bill please check your email address, I tried to mail you but it came back invalid

Would be interested in finding a site which lists those men who were aboard the USS Maryland. My father, Clyde Edward O'Malley was one of those men, rather boy. My father passed away several years ago, but I remember him talking about being on the USS Maryland, and having lied about his age to enter the Navy. He was born July 24, 1924, but I am not sure what year he entered the Navy and was on the USS Maryland. My name is Susan Williams Maness. My daddy was Benjamin R. Williams of Pinson, Tennessee. He and his brother Gerald served on the Maryland until of course they had to be separated. Daddy was a welder. Does anyone have any memories of him or Uncle Gerald? Daddy died almost instantly of a heart attack on February 18, 1994. Uncle Gerald died in the early 1980s of a heart attack. I would appreciate any information you would share with me. With love through Christ. Susan

My father served on the Maryland during the attack at Pearl. He was a radioman and was in the tower when the attack began. I have responded to two people who have left messages. Both were radiomen. Though my dad died 20 years ago, his stories are still vivid. I have many pictures. If there is anyone out there who knew John Lee Alford from Defuniac Springs, Florida please respond.
Thanks,
Donita Tannenbaum

Ahoy. My name is Joe McManus, I am a retired Senior Chief, and the son of Paul McManus, who was aboard the Maryland at Pearl Harbor as (I think) a seaman first class. He went on to become an FT1, and then was commissioned. Six years after Pearl, he was "bombed" again, as I was born on Dec. 7th, of 1947. Dad (and mom --Margaret Murphy McManus, a WWII Communications Specialist X in the Waves whom he met and married in Washington DC) passed away back in 1985. Several of his shipmates were able to be there for his funeral.

Anyhow, I wanted to find out if any of his shipmates are going to be coming out to Fredericksburg for the 60th Anniversary Observance. I hope to drive up for that (I live a little southeast of San Antonio) and would love to say Howdy.

Hello out there
I am lookig for info on my grandfather
Harold O. Wright. He was on the Maryland at
Pearl Harbor. He never told anybody in the
family about his adventures while on the
Maryland. After reading the other messages
that seems to be common. I was told he was
a gunner on the ship, and he was at Pearl.
Harold died in 1982 on Fathers Day. I was
to young to ask or absorb any knowledge his
incounters. I do have all his medals and his
Navy scrap book. My mom got all his medals
after he died, he didn't want them. He gave
my family so many good morals to live by
and to stay strong with that I want to honor
his service in the war.
I don't have a computer yet so call 605-393-9929
if you have any info.
Thank you!
Donny

My name is Jon Burdett. I have been building a postal history collection of ship cancellations for several years. I now have all but three of the ships at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41. Each entry has a canceled envelope, and a photo of the ship.
What I wish to add, is a signature from a Pearl Harbor Survivor. If you were there, on 12/7/41, and wouldn't mind signing a small piece with rank, please contact me. I wish to honor those who served with a display at major stamp shows.
Thanks for all you did that day.
Jon

By on Wednesday, January 26, 2000 - 12:34 am:

Hello everyone,

I am a grandson of a veteran of WWII. My Grandfather served on the U.S.S. Maryland as a gunner during the time of the invasion at Pearl Harbor and the campaigns thereafter. I am both proud and honored to say that my Grandfather served his country in this manner.

Almost a year and a half ago, my Grandfather had heart surgery. Due to complications including a few strokes during the surgery he is now living in a nursing home in my home town.

Over the past year and a half I have had a few conversations with him about his days in the service and the more I speak with him the more proud I have become of him.

Recently, it has become harder and harder to talk to him about anything. Because of his condition he occasionally is not mentally able to talk to me or to recognize his surroundings.

The reason for my writing this message is to hopefully find past survivors of the U.S.S Maryland to let them know of my Grandfather's condition and, if you knew him, tell me a little bit about him and how you knew each other.

My Grandfather's name is Ned DiMartino and he has many people around him that love him very much. Please, if you have anything to share with me or would like me to relay a message contact me at

My name is Tony DiMartino and I look forward to hearing from you soon...
