Hello: My father, Amado Sanchez Jr, served on the USS Maryland during WWII. I believe he served around 1944 - 1945, I have to double check the dates. My father passed away on the morning of May 30, 2004 after a long illness. He told us, his family, stories about his WWII service. He was very proud of his service, as we are of him, and the men who fought along side of him. We have pictures of him and some of his comrades aboard the USS Maryland. I am very proud of my dad and I wish to honor his memory. If you have any stories about my dad, my family and I would love to hear from you. Thank you all & peace be with you. Norma Sanchez Orozco

My brother J. Arnold Bickel was a crew member serving WWII I recently heard from him in a conversation we had. He was in the crows nest when it was hit my sucide plane from what I gathered. He prefers not discuss as I'm sure most vet's do. I would like to know more about the Maryland just as for my own interest of what all he and others went thru both good and bad times during that terrible period in US history. Items such as crew members who served or site, I can find them. Any pictures of crew members or of my brother on board if that is possible. Please advise. Thanks

I an very happy that I found your site!! My Grandfather, Giles Evans, was aboard the Maryland. He is alive and well and living in Lakewood also. I'm not real sure on how he would feel about me contacting any of his shipmates, but I do know this, he is a proud veteran. I love my Grandfather very much and my wife and I are proud of him, and everyone other veteran. I don't know if anyone will contact me, but I am going to tell my Grandfather (Pops) that I visited this wonderful site. I read about the reunion that is planned for 2004, I am anxious to see if he is interested in going. ANyway, you have a wonderful site, and I look forward to sharing this info with my Pops. By the way, I'm not sure of his rank and job, I'll have to ask him, but on that fateful morning in Pearl, he was busy setting up chairs for Chapel. I beliefe he was part of the loading crew for the big shells.

Information from the old guestbook.... My Dad, Stanley Edward Clark, Jr. from Marshall, Texas served on the Maryland for several years (43-45). He passed away in 1959, the year the Maryland was scrapped. While on the Maryland, he obtained a book on the Maryland that is great. I have had it all these years. Inside the book, I found a folded piece of paper (USS Maryland letterhead) with a list of some of Dad's shipmates who were his close friends I suppose. The names listed were: Thomas Mallow, R.D. Garner, William C. Calvin, Tex McIlroy, Bill Daughetry, Walter C. Cockran, Merle Calussen, Calussen Liggett, Gail Calusen, and Lewis Kilgore. Dad would have loved your reunions. Thanks to all the veterans who served on that magnificent ship.

My dad's only brother, Claire Raymond Brier, MM2C, was one of the two guys who died on the Maryland 12/7/41. Do any of you who were on the ship then remember remember Claire? Additionally, our family lore has it that Claire should have been on shore leave that weekend but had traded with a friend who needed the leave more. I have no idea how accurate that story is and would enjoy hearing from any one who may have insight to it. Thank you for your time. Hope to hear from some one who may remember Claire. Best wishes to you all.

I was going through some old papers tonight and came across an old newspaper clipping and it didn't have a date, so I looked you up on the internet - and - there you are. The clipping was in 1921 and it shows the presentation of the tablet inscribed with "The American's Creed" by William Tyler Page, who recited the creed that day as well as my mother, then 19 yrs. of age (Mr. Page's daughter), unfurled the Maryland colors presented to the dreadnaught by the Daughters of the American Revolution. My mother was, Mary Addison Page - later that year married an Annapolis graduate of 1921, who served on the USS Maryland, Ensign Joseph C. Cronin. The picture also shows Capt. Charles F. Preston, the C.O. of the USS Maryland at that time. I often wondered whatever happened to the bronze tablet that contained "The American's Creed". Can anyone out there enlighten me? 200 were aboard her that day in 1921.

I have been drawn to this site through curiosity and am enjoying it very much. When I was a lad in my teens in April, 1941, I was on a train from Canada through the USA and hence to Montreal, to catch a ship to England to join the Royal Air Force. On the train I met two young chaps a year or more older than me, who had just been honorably discharged from the USS Maryland after four years of service. Their names were as follows: John F. Organek, 66 South Street, Suffield, Connecticutt and George Pasilis, Rte 1, Box 271, Aurora, Illinois. It was only 8 months later that the USA was in WW2 and I often wondered if these lads were called back to their ship. I understand that at the time of their discharge they were serving on the USS Maryland. It sure would be wonderful if they happened to read this or someone who knows about them read this was able to get in tough with me.

To clairify my first Comment, my grandfather Bill Vance had been playing cards with friends on the Arizona on Saturday night, December 6, 1941, and left the Arizona to get back to the Maryland early the next morning, Sunday, December 7, 1941. Also, when my grandmother (Bill's wife, Margaret) and my mother (Marguerite) heard the news of the Japanese attack on Pearl, they knew my grandfather was there, but had no idea whether he was alive or dead. In those days, people were very tight-lipped about what ever they might know of what was going on, and it was almost 10 days after the attack when they got a phone call from a family friend in San Diego, simply saying "Bill says hello". Those three words were what told my mom and grandmother (living at that time in Long Beach, CA) that Bill was okay. In the 5 years that my grandfather served in the navy during WWII, he was only home a total of 27 days.

I am so happy to have discovered your website! My grandfather, William Alexander "Bill" Vance was aboard the Maryland during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and I can vividly recall his telling us all about it: that the planes seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere all at once, how he could see the faces of the pilots of the Japanese planes as they came in so low and started "strafing the hell out of us". The odd thing was that he had been playing cards with some of his friends on the Arizona, who invited him to just stay there and go back to the Maryland in the morning, but he couldn't do it as he had to roust the crew to get breakfast going in a few hours. He credits God for the decision to get back to "Old Mary".

It's authentic & original and a real collectable. I want to know what its value is & will consider bids. It no doubt has some good value to someone out there. It's a remnant of history.

This is small sliced of one of several articles posted in the Lafayette Journal Courier, Friday, March 23, 2003. Lafayette Indiana's Vince Amato will always remember Pearl Harbor ... and he will never forget the kids in Mark Preston's history class at Jefferson High School. "I love all of you," Amato, a 79-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor, told the teenagers Friday. "Whenever you see me on the street, don't say 'Mister,' say 'Vince.' I'll feel good." Four weeks ago, Preston invited Amato to speak to the students about his experiences as a young sailor on Dec. 7, 1941, when the U.S. Pacific Fleet was attacked by the Japanese. Amato's battleship, the USS Maryland, was bombed. Some 2,340 military personnel died that day, throwing the United States into World War II. Responding to a question, Amato said he had never returned to Pearl Harbor. A student in the class, Ashley Gillam, 17, then launched a fund-raiser that will pay for Amato and his daughter to fly to Hawaii on March 23 and spend a week there, all expenses paid. Amato said, "When I read in the paper and see on TV what young people do, it's not good. Then, when I see this, I can't help but cry about it. "How do I say thanks?" he asked the class. "I know the word, and I know how to spell it. "If we ever have to go back to war, I'll go back for all of you." This article is among can be read in it's entirety at www.jconline.com and Search "Amato"

Today, March 6, 2003 finishing touches will be added to an exhibit at The Dundalk/ Patapsco Neck Historical Society in Dundalk Maryland, Featuring the Battleship USS Maryland BB-46. Included in the display will be photos of the ship, Blue prints, maps, books, photos of sailors, copies of deck logs, a tape of a Baltimore radio station broadcast of the WW II saga of the Maryland and even copies of " The Catapult", the Fighting Marys shipboard newletter. The USS Maryland was commissioned on July 21, 1921. She was 624 feet long, displaced over 32,000 tons and was the first US Navy ship to mount 16" guns and first battleship to carry a plane catapult. In 1929 the Maryland while serving in the Pacific Fleet, was given the honor on carrying President-elect Herbert Hoover and his cabinet on a trip to visit central and South America. The Maryland was present at Pearl Harbor that tragic morning of December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked. Though reported sunk by Japanese newscasts, the Maryland recieved only light damage and after a trip to Bremerton, Washington, she was ready to fight again in February, 1942. By the conclusion of the war, the Maryland had been bloodied 3 times by the Japanese, lost many brave men, and earned 7 battlestars. She was decommissioned in 1946, placed in resevered and scrapped in 1959. For more information on the exhibit contact Steve Pavlosky @ MrCairo46 or phone @ 410-285-5239 or 410-285-7792

Greetings to the Maryland veterans! I am in the process of assembling a historical collection of US battleship newspapers. To date, I have assembled papers from 6 of the battleships that were at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41. I currently have a 1928 copy of "The Morning Hurricane" from the Maryland. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who had an actual copy of "The Catapult" that they would be interesting in selling. Rest assured, this is a legitimate historical collection that is on display in my home--many navy veterans have come to see it. May I please hear from you? I would appreciate it! I served in the Maryland from September 1943 to October 1944 -- first as an Ensign in the main battery plotting room, F Division, (where I lost many pinochle games during inactive general quarters) under Lt. Warren Lowery, and then as a Lt. jg, First Division Officer. I left the ship at Manus Island to return to the States for flight training. Some weeks later, I learned, the ship was hit by a kamikaze off Leyte: Assuming the accuracy of the report, the plane struck turret two and slid under the overhang of turret one; tragically, the man who had taken my place was killed doing what I would have been doing -- sitting in the open hatch up into the overhang. Can anyone verify this account? Does anyone happen to remember me? -- Jonathan Leff

My dad served aboard the USS Maryland at the end of WW II. Approx. the spring/ summer of 1945. He is still living here in Freelandville, Indiana. He is a bit of a "grouch" these days and I can't talk him into signing this guestbook himself. Says he has no interest, but I think if he could contact an old shipmate he would be very happy. His name is Herbert "Ike" Held. I think he served as a fireman (?) aboard ship.

My dad, Mark DeLong (CWO) served on the Maryland throughout WW II and was at Pearl Harbor. I was wondering if anyone remembers him? His nickname was "Chips" and from stories he told he was friends with "Stinky Davis", and Johnny Johnson. I'm trying to find out more about his Navy years. He passed away in May 1996. Also, thank you to all the kind men who let my son Alex interview them at the 60th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Maryland Luncheon - the video he made is really touching and was shown at his school - the intrviews really brought home Pearl Harbor to the kids!

A Great use of the internet! This is a wonderful site and we thank the originators. I would also like to thank all those men and women who served this country in all of its conflicts to save freedom! My father served on the proud "Mary" from 42 thru 45 I believe. His name is Joesph E. Dorsey or "Jack Dorsey" from Houston Texas. He joined at the age of 17 and spent time as a cook but was later a second class fire-controll man for the 16". He has told me storys about the war and the great ship all my life and I have come to love her(Maryland)as if it was me that was aboard her. I am very proud of my modest, quite spoken father who did his part to stop the oppression of evil against our great country! His love for the great ship is evident anytime we speak of her. There are shipmates he would like to see and hear from, wait until I give him this site, he will be excited! If you would like to say hello to him or me for that matter please contact me at dorseyclan or phone me at (281)565-0210 ask for Mike! Thanks again for a great site we can all enjoy!
